This is an extremely scarce date for this mintmark, since the mark was not actually introduced until 29 May 1574 - a full two
months after New Year. The only possible explanation is that the new mark was added to old dies dated 1573 without then
overstriking the final digit of the date.

this base metal item, about extremely fine for issue and very rare thus /^200-300

As stated in the footnote to lot 330 in the St James’ Auction 4, the attribution of this item as an Accession medal may well not be correct.
The portrait does not represent the queen at the time of her accession to the throne in the 1550s. The style of portrait and dress suggest a
date much later in the reign and a very similar representation of the queen is to be found on the following extremely rare token which bears
the date 1589. Also, Elizabeth did not adopt the phoenix as a personal badge until some time in the 1570s. Both these facts would suggest
that there is no grounding for this token’s traditional attribution as an accession medal.

exergue (M.I. 1, -; Mitchener -), only poor to fair but extremely rare, less than six specimens traced /^80-120

The similarity of portraiture on the last two lots suggests that the so-caUed Accession medal’ should be dated to the 1580s.

£7000-8000

This high-relief pattern, probably struck by Abraham Vanderdoort is quite unlike anything adopted for currency It also bears little
resemblance to the lower relief unites struck by Briot in the 1630s. It was probably felt that its medallic qualities made it unsuitable
for general circulation. It seems that the king, however, took a personal interest in raising the artistic standard of the coinage - an
interest perhaps stimulated by the collection of coins and medals formed by his late brother, Henry, prince of Wales.

The present specimen has a group of four pellets to the right of the obverse mintmark and two similar groups on either side of the reverse
mark. Although Brooker has almost thirty specimens of shillings of Sharp group E, none exhibits these elaborate extra marks (but see his
522 obverse and 529 reverse for less extravagant examples). It seems likely that these groups of pellets were some kind of extra moneyer’s
control mark, perhaps to do with the internal workings of the Mint or the Pyx trial.

due for a price rise.

The coinage of Russia developed very quickly during the reign of Peter the Great. Even as late as 1700, most of the coins
circulation had changed little since medieval times. By the time of Peter’s death in 1725, the coinage had been westernised
and was rapidly falling into line with the coins of the rest of Europe. While most of the coinage bears the imperial double
eagle on the reverse, this short-lived series of 2 roubles, struck from 1718 to 1728, is unusual in its choice of St. Andrew
for the reverse design.
